  • 1948 – The Ceylon Citizenship Act, which rendered Indian Tamils, constituting 11% of Sri Lanka’s population, stateless, was passed in the Ceylon Parliament.
  • 1977 – A. Amirthalingam was elected as the Leader of the Opposition in Sri Lanka.
  • 1985 – The Sampalthivu massacre in Trincomalee killed more than 25 people.
