  • 1816 – Newstead Girls College (Wesley Girl’s High School), one of Sri Lanka’s oldest schools, was established by the Wesleyan Methodist Mission in Negombo, Gampaha.
  • 1833 – The Charter of Justice was proclaimed.
  • 1848 – George Byng, 7th Viscount Torrington, the Governor, declared martial law in the Kurunegala District due to social unrest.
  • 1876 – Sir Arthur Nonus Birch, Lieutenant Governor of Ceylon, inaugurated a new iron girder bridge, stretching 1,720 feet in length, over the Kalu Ganga at Kalutara.
  • 1948 – Duncan White became the first Ceylonese/Sri Lankan to win an Olympic medal, winning silver in the Men’s 400 meters hurdles at the 1948 Summer Olympics in London, England.
