  • 1587 – The first Portuguese reinforcements from Goa arrived in Colombo, consisting of a galley and six fustas with 250 soldiers, to support the defense against the Siege of Colombo.
  • 1889 – The newspaper Intucātan̲am (Hindu Organ) was founded in Jaffna.
  • 1945 – The Cabinet agreed to use the Soulbury report as the basis for creating the island’s new constitution.
