  • 1695 – Paulus de Roo ended his service as the governor of Dutch Ceylon.
  • 1883 – The first public sale of Ceylon teas took place in Colombo at the office of Messrs.
  • 1983 – The government banned three left-wing political parties, including the Communist Party of Sri Lanka, Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna, and Nava Sama Samaja Party, accusing them of inciting the anti-Tamil pogrom, and arrested leaders of other groups.
  • 1987 – Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi was assaulted by a member of the Sri Lankan navy sailor and honor guard during a parade at President’s House, Colombo, due to Rajiv’s involvement in the Sri Lankan war.
  • 1987 – About 6000 Indian troops, known as the Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF), were deployed to northern Sri Lanka as part of a peacekeeping mission.
  • 1990 – The Pottuvil massacre occurred in Pottuvil, Ampara, claiming the lives of 125 people.
  • 1995 – The General Officer Commanding of the 3rd Army Division of the Sri Lankan Army was killed in a landmine attack in Batticaloa.
