The Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) on January 17, 2025 announced a significant reduction in electricity tariffs for the first half of the year. This decision follows instructions from the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Energy. The new tariffs bring a 20% overall reduction for domestic consumers, which will directly impact household electricity bills. For households, the reductions vary based on consumption: there is a 29% reduction for usage between 0 and 30 units, 28% for 31 to 60 units, 19% for 61 to 90 units, 18% for 91 to 180 units, and a 19% reduction for consumption above 180 units.
Religious and charitable organizations will benefit from an even larger reduction of 21%. In addition, other sectors such as hotels will see a 31% reduction in their electricity charges, while the industrial sector will have a 30% reduction. Businesses using electricity for general purposes will experience a 12% reduction, and government institutions and street lamps will enjoy an 11% reduction. These tariff adjustments are aimed at reducing the financial burden on consumers and various industries across the country. The new rates will take effect starting at midnight on January 17, 2025.
