National Day of Sri Lanka

The National Day of Sri Lanka, also known as Independence Day, is celebrated annually on February 4th. It marks the country’s independence from British rule in 1948. The Sri Lankan Constitution officially recognizes this day as the “National Day of the Republic of Sri Lanka,” making it a national holiday.

Independence Day commemorates the freedom gained from British colonial rule after many years of struggle. On this day, the nation reflects on its journey to independence and honors the sacrifices made by national heroes.

Main Celebrations in Colombo

The primary celebrations take place in Colombo, the capital city. The day begins with the President of Sri Lanka hoisting the national flag at an official ceremony. This marks the start of the national commemoration.

The Sri Lanka Navy traditionally performs a 21-gun salute from the ceremonial naval gun battery in Colombo, honoring the country’s independence. Following this, there is a grand military parade that showcases the strength and unity of Sri Lanka’s army, navy, air force, police, and civil defense force.

The President delivers an important speech, where he highlights the country’s achievements, addresses key national issues, and pays tribute to the nation’s heroes. A moment of silence is observed in their memory.

In addition to military displays, religious and cultural activities are also an integral part of the day. People from different religious backgrounds come together to offer prayers for the prosperity of the nation. Traditional dances and other cultural performances are organized, representing the diverse heritage of Sri Lanka.

The main events are held at significant locations in Colombo, such as the Independence Memorial Hall in Cinnamon Gardens and Galle Face Green, a 12-acre ocean-side park in the heart of the city. While Colombo is the main venue for the celebrations, on several occasions, the primary events have been moved to other districts such as Anuradhapura, Trincomalee, and others.

Nationwide Observance

In the week leading up to Independence Day, many Sri Lankan households decorate their homes with the national flag. On February 4th, people gather to watch a live telecast of the main events, including the President’s flag-hoisting, speech, and the military parade.

While the most prominent celebrations happen in Colombo, Sri Lanka’s districts also host their own observances. Local government officials conduct flag-hoisting ceremonies and deliver speeches, reflecting the national importance of the day across the country.
