National Gemstone of Sri Lanka

The national gemstone of Sri Lanka is blue sapphire. In October 2003, the blue sapphire was officially declared the national gemstone of Sri Lanka. To mark this recognition, a postage stamp worth LKR 4.50 was issued on October 2, 2003. Sri Lanka is known for its world-renowned blue sapphire gemstones.

The blue sapphire is a precious variety of the mineral corundum. Sri Lanka is famous for producing some of the world’s most beautiful and valuable blue sapphires, earning it a reputation as a key player in the global gem industry. Blue sapphires are known for their striking blue color; these sapphires are often referred to as ‘Ceylon Sapphires’ or ‘Sri Lankan Sapphires.’

Some of the most notable ones include The Logan Sapphire, The Giant of the Orient, Blue Bella of Asia, The Star of India, Pride of Sri Lanka, Empress Maria’s Sapphire, Bismarck Sapphire and The Star of Bombay.

These gemstones have been highly prized by royalty, collectors, and museums worldwide. Many have adorned crowns, thrones, and tiaras, becoming symbols of power and wealth throughout history.

In Sri Lanka, blue sapphires are primarily mined from pits, a practice that has been in place for centuries.
