• 1880 – The Inner Harbour Wall of the Colombo Breakwater was completed, reducing its width from 50 feet to 34 feet.
• 1956 – In Ceylon’s parliamentary elections, the ruling United National Party lost to the Mahajana Eksath Peramuna (MEP), led by S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike, in a landslide victory.
