• 1947 – Sri Lanka established diplomatic relations with Australia.
• 1992 – A massacre in Muthugal and Karapola, Polonnaruwa, killed 87 people.
• 1995 – The Sri Lanka Air Force’s Hawker Siddeley HS 748 (Avro HS 748) airliner was shot down by the LTTE using a MANPADS, killing all 3 crew members and 49 passengers, including an investigation team sent to probe the previous day’s loss of another Avro HS 748 airliner.
