The Ministry of Buddha Sasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs told the public to follow the official list of auspicious times issued by the State Astrologers’ Committee for the 2024 Sinhala and Tamil New Year celebrations. It is locally known as Avurudu Nakath.
The statement urges everyone to adhere to the list of auspicious timings that was issued by the Astrologers’ committee. The details are given below for Sinhala Aluth Avurudu Litha 2024 (Auspicious Times) including simple English translation:
- New Moon Sighting: Thursday, April 11, the new moon sighting would take place.
- Bath for old year: April 11, bath in water mixed with Bo leaves, and religious observance.
- New Year dawn: Sinhala New Year dawns on Saturday 13th of April at 09.05 pm.
- Inauspicious time: From 2.41 pm on Saturday 13th April to 3.29 am on Sunday 14th April.
- Traditional meal: At 11.06 p.m. on Saturday, April 13th; dressed in blue and looking towards the south direction, prepare milk rice and sweets mixed with sesame seeds.
- Working, dealing (transactions) and having meal: Begins on Sunday 14th April at 12.06 am. (See traditional meal above)
- Anointing oil: On Monday 15th April at 10.17 am; dressed in white and face the south direction, put imbul leaves (Bombax ceiba L.; cotton tree; ඉඹුල්) on your head and divul leaves (Limonia acidissima; Wood apple; දිවුල්) on your feet and take a bath mixed with divul leave extracts and and oil.
- Departures for work: At 6.52 am on Wednesday, April 17, dressed in green, take meal with milk rice and sweets while facing the north.
- Planting: Thursday 18th April at 10.16 am, dressed in gold, and facing the east.
