Gampaha district

Gampaha District is a one of key areas in the Western Province of Sri Lanka. It is known for its diverse population, and strategic location. The district plays a vital role in the country’s economy. It is known as ගම්පහ දිස්ත්රික්කය (gampaha distrikkaya) in Sinhala and கம்பஹா மாவட்டம் (Kampaka Māvaṭṭam) in Tamil.

History

The history of Gampaha District is deeply connected to the kings and kingdoms of Sri Lanka. In ancient times, parts of the district were under the rule of various local kings. The area was known for its lush forests and was often a retreat for royals.

During the colonial era, Gampaha transformed significantly. The British developed the road and railway system, which passed through the district, boosting the local economy and changing the landscape. Many towns in Gampaha began to grow around these main roads railway stations.
