Kilinochchi District is one of the 25 districts in Sri Lanka. It is located in the Northern Province. It is known for its agricultural activities. The district has made significant progress after facing years of challenges during the Sri Lankan Civil War. It is known as කිලිනොච්චි දිස්ත්‍රික්කය (kilinocci distrikkaya) in Sinhala and கிளிநொச்சி மாவட்டம் (Kiḷinocci Māvaṭṭam) in Tamil.

History

Kilinochchi has a fascinating history that dates back many centuries. In ancient times, it was a part of the Jaffna Kingdom. The district played an important role in the Tamil Kingdom’s administration, trade, and culture. During the colonial era, the Portuguese, Dutch, and British influenced the region. They left their mark on its culture, infrastructure, and governance.

In more recent history, Kilinochchi was heavily affected by the Sri Lankan Civil War, which lasted from 1983 to 2009. The district was a major stronghold for the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). It witnessed intense battles and significant damage to infrastructure. However, after the war ended in 2009, Kilinochchi began to rebuild. Roads, schools, and hospitals were reconstructed, and life slowly returned to normal.

Geography

Kilinochchi District covers an area of approximately 1,279 square kilometers (494 sq mi). It is surrounded by Mullaitivu District to the east, Mannar District to the south, and Jaffna District to the north. The western part of Kilinochchi faces the Indian Ocean, providing scenic coastal views.

The district has flat terrain, with fertile lands that are ideal for agriculture. Major rivers like the Kanakarayan Aru and Akkarayan Aru flow through the region, supporting farming and irrigation. The Kilinochchi Tank and Iranamadu Tank are large water reservoirs that play a key role in the district’s agriculture.
