Jaffna District is located in the northernmost part of Sri Lanka. It is known for its rich cultural heritage and significant history. This district is part of the Northern Province and plays a crucial role in the cultural and political landscape of Sri Lanka. Its main city, Jaffna, is the cultural capital of the Tamil people in the country. It is known as යාපනය දිස්ත්‍රික්කය ( yāpanaya distrikkaya) in Sinhala and யாழ்ப்பாண மாவட்டம் (Yāḻppāṇa Māvaṭṭam) in Tamil.

History

The history of Jaffna District is long and storied. It was originally part of the well-established Jaffna Kingdom, which was a powerful Tamil kingdom from the 13th to the 17th century. The kingdom was known for its unique culture and advanced society. In 1619, the Portuguese conquered Jaffna, marking the beginning of European colonial rule. After the Portuguese, the Dutch took over in 1658, followed by the British in 1796. Each of these colonizers left their mark on the district. Sri Lanka gained independence in 1948, but Jaffna continued to experience significant historical events, particularly during the civil war that affected the area from 1983 to 2009. This period was marked by conflict and hardship for the local population.
