Initially it was estimated up to US$100 million. However, during a Committee on Public Enterprises (COPE) meeting have shed light on a stark contrast between its perceived value and its actual worth.

Serendipity Sapphire

Etymology: Serendipity Sapphire

The term “Serendipity Sapphire” derived from the old name of Sri Lanka, which was “Serendip”. Sri Lanka has a long history of producing sapphires. The star sapphire cluster from Sri Lanka with its association to the historical name “Serendip” has been given the name “Serendipity Sapphire” to highlight their origin and the serendipitous nature of their discovery.

The name “Serendipity Sapphire” is not an official gemological term, but rather a marketing name or a nickname used to evoke the connection between the star sapphire cluster and the island of Sri Lanka’s gemstone heritage.

Value

During Committee on Public Enterprises (COPE) meeting, officials from the National Gem and Jewellery Authority delivered a stunning revelation regarding Serendipity Sapphire. Contrary to its earlier estimated value, the gem was deemed to be worth a mere USD 10,000. The officials stated that the gem posses only an antique value and would be more suitable as a museum piece rather than a gemstone to be cut and polished.

They emphasized that it was impossible to alter the gem’s state without compromising its integrity and aesthetic appeal. This disclosure shook the gem industry, raising concerns about the accuracy of initial evaluations and the dissemination of misleading information. The COPE chairman expressed disappointment in the officials of the National Gem and Jewellery Authority for misleading the public, stressing the importance of transparency and professionalism within the industry. The incident served as a sobering reminder of the need for accurate assessments and responsible communication when dealing with extraordinary gemstones.

Star Sapphire

A star sapphire is a specific type of sapphire that displays a phenomenon called asterism. Asterism is the appearance of a star-shaped pattern on the surface of the gem. It caused by intersecting needle-like inclusions of a mineral called rutile within the sapphire crystal structure. They create a star-like effect with usually six rays when these inclusions align in a specific manner.

Cluster

A gemstone cluster refers to a group or cluster of multiple gemstones that are naturally occurring together. These clusters can form within the host rock or matrix. In some cases, gemstones can found in close proximity or clustered within the same geological formation or deposit. These natural gemstone clusters can be quite fascinating and can vary in size and composition. However, naturally occurring gemstone clusters are relatively rare when compared to individual gemstone specimens. Most gemstones found as single crystals rather than in clusters or groups. Gemstone clusters often valued for their unique aesthetic appeal and rarity.
