Largest sapphire aggregate

The largest sapphire aggregate is Serendipity Sapphire. It weighs 503.2 kg (1109 lbs and 5.86 oz), making it an extraordinary discovery. It is also known as the largest star sapphire cluster, a remarkable achievement in the world of gemstones. It is also known as world’s largest star sapphire cluster. It is made a record in Guinness World Records.

The Serendipity Sapphire was found in Kahawatte village in Ratnapura, Sri Lanka, in July 2021. It is made up of a cluster of star sapphires, which are known for their unique, star-like pattern that appears on the surface when the stone is cut in a cabochon shape. The sapphire has a pale blue color and measures 100 cm in length, 72 cm in width, and 50 cm in height. Its weight is an astounding 2,516,000 carats.

This massive gemstone’s record achieved by Ashan Pavithra Gamage in Zurich, Switzerland, on 11 February 2022.

Star Sapphire and Cluster

Star sapphires are different from regular sapphires because they show a star-like effect on their surface. This effect is caused by the presence of rutile inclusions inside the sapphire. When light hits the stone, the rutile creates a star-shaped reflection, giving the sapphire its distinct look. When these star sapphires grow together in a cluster, they form a unique, large gemstone, as seen in the Serendipity Sapphire.

Worth

Initially, the sapphire was estimated to be worth up to US$100 million. However, after discussions between Committee on Public Enterprises and the National Gem and Jewellery Authority, its value was reassessed to be just about 10,000 US Dollars. Despite this, the sapphire has high value for its antique significance and its Guinness World Record as the largest sapphire aggregate.

Declaimer: This record may break from time to time, but it is currently recorded in Sri Lanka’s Guinness World Records as the largest sapphire aggregate.
