Monaragala district is one of the 25 districts in Sri Lanka. It is located in the Uva Province. It is known for its rich natural resources and beautiful landscapes. This district offers a glimpse into the traditional life of Sri Lanka, as well as its development in modern times. It is known as මොණරාගල දිස්ත්‍රික්කය (moṇarāgala distrikkaya) in Sinhala and மொணராகலை மாவட்டம் (Moṇarākalai Māvaṭṭam) in Tamil.

History

Monaragala has a history that dates back thousands of years. Ancient texts and archaeological findings show that this area was part of the Ruhuna Kingdom, one of the major kingdoms in early Sri Lankan history. This region played a crucial role in the island’s history, with evidence of ancient settlements and Buddhist heritage, including stupas and temples built by ancient kings.

Geography

Monaragala district covers an area of about 5,636 square kilometers (2,176 sq mi). Monaragala is the second largest district in Sri Lanka. It is bordered by Badulla District to the north, Ampara District to the east, Hambantota District to the south, and Ratnapura District to the west. The landscape includes lowlands, rolling hills, and thick forests, making it a vital region for agriculture and wildlife. The district is also home to part of the famous Yala National Park, which is a key attraction for both local and international tourists.
