Kurunegala district

Kurunegala district is of of the districts in Sri Lanka. It serves as the capital of the North Western Province and is a crucial hub linking several other parts of the country. This district offers a blend of cultural heritage and modernity, making it an interesting place for both locals and visitors. It is known as කුරුණෑගල දිස්ත්‍රික්කය (kuruṇǣgala distrikkaya) in Sinhala and குருநாகல் மாவட்டம் (Kurunākal Māvaṭṭam) in Tamil.

History

The history of Kurunegala stretches back over many centuries. It was the royal capital of Sri Lanka during the 13th and 14th centuries. Several kings ruled from here, including King Buwanekabahu II. He chose Kurunegala as his capital because of its strategic location and natural defenses, surrounded by large rocks.

During these times, Kurunegala was a thriving center of commerce and culture. The legacy of this era can still be seen in the ancient ruins and traditional architecture scattered throughout the district.

Geography

Kurunegala lies in the northwestern part of Sri Lanka, about 94 kilometers from Colombo. The district is famous for its unique landscape, dominated by huge rock formations. The climate here is tropical, with a mix of dry and wet weather, making it fertile for agriculture.

The district covers an area of about 4,816 square kilometers (1,859 sq mi). It features a range of geographical attractions, from lush paddy fields and coconut plantations to forests and hills, offering beautiful views and a peaceful environment.
