Matale District is a district in the Central Province of Sri Lanka. It is known for its unique geography, and diverse culture. It is known as මාතලේ දිස්ත්‍රික්කය (mātalē distrikkaya) in Sinhala and மாத்தளை மாவட்டம் (Māttaḷai Māvaṭṭam) in Tamil.

History

Matale’s history is long and fascinating. It has been an important part of Sri Lanka since ancient times. The area was a hub for the island’s spice trade, which made it very important for business. This region has seen many historical events, including a famous rebellion against the British in 1848. This event is known as the Matale Rebellion.

Historical sites like Aluvihare Rock Temple are also in Matale. This temple is very important because it’s where the Pali Canon, a key Buddhist scripture, was first written down. This shows Matale’s role in preserving Buddhist traditions.

Geography

Matale District is beautifully set among hills and forests. Its land has high areas like the Knuckles Mountain Range. This range has peaks that reach up to 1200 meters (4000 ft). The district’s geography makes it perfect for growing spices like pepper, clove, and nutmeg, which are known worldwide.
