Vavuniya district is a district in Northern province. It is known for its cultural diversity and rich history. The district serves as a gateway between the northern and southern parts of the country. Its central town, also named Vavuniya, is an important commercial and transportation hub. The district has unique traditions, beautiful landscapes, and friendly communities.

It is known as වවුනියා දිස්ත්‍රික්කය (vavuniyā distrikkaya) in Sinhala and வவுனியா மாவட்டம் (Vavuṉiyā Māvaṭṭam) in Tamil.

History

The history of Vavuniya goes back many centuries. During ancient times, this area was part of the Anuradhapura Kingdom. It played a key role in connecting northern and southern Sri Lanka. For many years, it was home to Tamil and Sinhalese kingdoms. Archaeological findings suggest the presence of early settlements and trade activities.

In more recent history, Vavuniya was affected by Sri Lanka’s civil war, which lasted for nearly three decades. The district faced hardships during the conflict.

Geography

Vavuniya District is located in the Northern Province of Sri Lanka. It covers an area of about 1,967 square kilometers (759 sq mi). The district is surrounded by Mullaitivu District (North), Anuradhapura District (South), Mannar District (West) and Trincomalee District (East).

The geography of Vavuniya is a mix of flat plains and small hills. The land is mostly dry, with some areas used for agriculture. There are rivers and tanks (large reservoirs) that support farming and provide water for the community. The district has a tropical climate with hot temperatures most of the year. Rain falls mainly during the monsoon seasons.
