Mullaitivu city

Mullaitivu is a small town located on the north-eastern coast of Northern Province, Sri Lanka. It is the capital city of Mullaitivu District and has a population of around 28,973 people, based on the 2012 census. The town is known for its fishing activities, with small sailing vessels transporting goods through its harbor. History

The British fort in Mullaitivu was besieged, and a British captain along with his soldiers managed to escape by boats to Jaffna.

In more recent history, Mullaitivu was a key location during the Sri Lankan Civil War. In 1996, the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) took after overrunning a Sri Lankan army base. The town was severely damaged by the 2004 tsunami, but it later recovered. In January 2009, the Sri Lankan Army took control of Mullaitivu.
